How long your Odoo takes from anywhere, measured

A run of 21 real Odoo requests, repeated from 44 cities across 37 countries. We publish what the probe measured in each one, untouched, and what that means for someone working with the session already open.

Our network

Distance is paid once. We cut everything else down.

Your Odoo is served from Spain, through a single entry gateway. What happens between that gateway and the person working depends on two things: how well connected the network it lives on is, and how little we make the data travel.

Where it starts

An entry gateway in Spain, the single point of access from the Internet, which terminates encryption and routes every request. Everything passes through it, which is why that is where we measure.

What it runs on

Sarenet's infrastructure — a telecommunications operator with its own data centres in Spain. Not a cloud reseller: the network itself, and that shows in the number of hops between you and your data.

What we add on top

Brotli compression, HTTP/2, TLS 1.3 and files cached for weeks. Half the improvement you see in the tables does not come from the cable. It comes from here.

Interconnection

You reach the Internet by buying transit from a third party or by exchanging traffic directly with other networks at an exchange point. The second shortens the path and removes middlemen. Sarenet does both, and it is checkable on PeeringDB.

Open means it exchanges with any network present at those exchange points, without negotiating case by case: fewer hops between your office and your Odoo.

What we do with that network

The cable sets the floor. Above the floor, what decides the result is how many bytes we send and how many times we send them.

  • Brotli on everything heavy The Odoo program drops from 7.33 MB to 1.64 MB, 78 % less. The stylesheet, from 1.12 MB to 0.17 MB, 85 % less. Those are megabytes that never cross the Atlantic.
  • One connection, many requests With HTTP/2 and TLS 1.3 the browser opens the connection once and reuses it. That is the difference between the two scenarios you can compare below.
  • What you already have is not requested again Program files are served with versioned names and long expiry: they download on day one and later visits start without them.
  • Rate limiting always on The gateway limits the request rate per origin. It is active in every environment, with or without a contracted application firewall.

How we measured it

The whole method, in the open, so you can argue with it

A latency figure with no method behind it is worth nothing. Here is ours, with its checks and its limits.

  1. A run, not a ping

    Probes around the world execute the 21 requests Odoo actually makes: open a list, page through it, search for a customer, group a report, generate a PDF. Every run ends by repeating the cheapest request of the lot, which acts as a control.

  2. Two readings of the same run

    The probe opens a new connection on every request, so its timing includes name resolution, connection and encryption. That is what an external system calling in isolation experiences, and it is the reading you get when you pick the API scenario: the more expensive of the two.

  3. The browser reading starts from that same figure

    Someone working with the session open does not pay for the connection again. We count how many extra round trips the probe is charged — fitting each city's control test against its real round-trip time — and take them off that city's figure. No constant takes their place: it starts from that city's own data, and the floor is one round trip, which physics will not let you go below.

  4. The control separates the network from the rest

    The last request of each run never touches the database, so its time is almost purely the round trip. Subtracting it from each test within the same run leaves what that test adds on its own, and that is measurement too: both requests paid the same round trips in the same execution.

  5. The fit, kept separate and in the open

    On those differences we fit, test by test and against each city's real round trip, a line whose intercept is the server's work and whose slope is the extra round trips it costs to move the bytes. Those two constants are the same for all 44 cities — that is the whole point of them — so they do not appear as if they were local data: they live in each test's tooltip, with its R².

  6. The round trip is measured by someone else

    Each city's round-trip time does not come from the same tool that runs the tests, but from an independent probe network, with several probes per city, keeping the middle value.

All 21 tests read; none writes. Measuring writes against a shared environment would make it useless for everyone else, so creating and modifying records stays out of this run.

Why a nearer city can come out slower

Sort the table by round trip and some pairs fall out of order. Dubai is 220 ms away and Buenos Aires 242, yet Dubai takes almost twice as long. That is not a measurement error: it is precisely what is being measured.

The round trip sets the floor — distance fixes that and nothing brings it down — but what you pay on top depends on the quality of the route: how many networks have to be crossed, whether the return path matches the outbound one, and how well connected that city's probe is. The probe pays 3.74 round trips per request on average. From Dubai it pays 5.6 and from Buenos Aires 2.9. That difference, not distance, is what interconnection is about.

What the method checks and what it does not

The control test behaves as it should

A 4-byte response has no bytes to move, so it should cost zero transfer round trips: it comes out at 0.01. The 1.6 MB program comes out at 6.43, and the 169 KB stylesheet at 2.96. That progression is what TCP slow start predicts, and we did not impose it: it falls out of the fit.

The round trip is measured by a different network

The round-trip time everything is fitted against does not come from the tool that runs the tests, but from an independent probe network, with several probes per city. The two sources ought to agree, and they do.

Eight cities are excluded from the fit

Copenhagen, Toronto, Singapore, Medellin, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Dubai and Tokyo alternate between two different routes, and the jump shows up in the control test too. Their figures are published, but they do not feed the fits: those are computed from the remaining 36.

Three yardsticks, because not every wait is the same

Measuring everything against one table is a mistake. The classic perception thresholds describe how long an interface takes to answer a click; applying them to starting a program or composing a document labels the result wrongly. None of the marks below is ours: every one comes from published work.

Miller (1968) and Nielsen (1993) set the 0.1 s, 1 s and 10 s marks. The 400 ms is the Doherty threshold, from the IBM Systems Journal in 1982: below it neither the person nor the system waits on the other, and productivity rises by more than the time falls.

Minimal server response

A request the server answers without querying the database or building anything.

It separates the network from the software. If this is fast and a view is slow, the problem is not distance.

The heaviest file of all. It downloads once and stays cached for weeks. This is where Brotli compression cuts the most.

Pressing Print on an order, or a customer downloading their quotation from the link they received by email.

The server assembles the template and converts it to PDF with an internal browser. It is the most expensive thing Odoo does, and it is pure server work: distance barely changes it. That is why a report takes almost the same in Spain as in Peru.
